Actual base, if pictured, may vary but will be the same type (i.e. square, round or hexagon) and of the correct size.

I generally wrap each figure in bubble wrap, sometimes several in a row for multiple figure lots, and tape the roll.
More durable miniatures without long weapons and so forth I will often ship in a bubble mailer as above, and possibly also wrapped in a paper shell of catalog pages (scrap paper).
More delicate figures (or well-painted figures) always ship in a mailer box.
